Tonic Department Structure

Along with two other directors, I prioritized three goals to address the most pressing needs of the design department. Our first goal was to retain and develop the existing group of designers.

We created a high-level plan to accomplish our goals, starting with Assessment.

At the time, there was no department structure, and individuals were unsure of how to move ahead in their careers. So, we combined our years of experience at various agencies, listened to what our designers wanted, and did some research to ultimately land at the roles below.

From there, we created a comprehensive roles & responsibilities matrix to efficiently track and communicate individual growth.

This matrix lead to the creation of the wheel, which is a worksheet used in one-on-one sessions to discuss skill progression. As you grow with the company, so should your focus and responsibilities.

What I learned:
Most designers welcome feedback and want to grow, so as a director I had to make sure there were proper tools and methods in place to track and record this growth. When I first learned that Tonic didn’t have these processes, I was slightly alarmed, but ultimately it was an opportunity to shape the design department.
